In particular, there is concern about the increasing resistance of many pathogens to new drugs. antibiotic resistance is causing particular worries, with the spectre of 'super-bugs' now occupying the attention of the popular press. In Britain the government instructed doctors in September 1998 to avoid prescribing antibiotics in minor self-limiting infectious conditions such as colds and sore throats or when infections are likely to be viral in origin.
The role for phytotherapy in infectious diseases is likely to increase rather than diminish. |

Monsanto's own data further show up to an 80% incidence of mastitis, an udder infection, in hormone-treated cattle and resulting contamination of milk with statistically significant levels of pus; this will necessitate virtually routine use of antibiotics, with attendant risks of allergic reactions and antibiotic resistance.
Congress should insist that, at the very least, the FDA immediately revoke its restrictions on labeling of milk from untreated cows.
More prudently, it should ban the use of these hormones. |

Ridding the body of the infection deprives the bacterium of opportunities to develop antibiotic resistance, and also ensures that it will not be spread to others.
LJ Several traditional Chinese herbal formulas can be used to treat the fertility problems that may result from gonorrhea infection. In women, Peony and Licorice Decoction increases estrogen production, which in turn increases the probability of conception, while Dong Quai and Peony Powder is used in Japan to prevent miscarriage. In men, Warm the Menses Decoction can reduce the risk of infertility. |

Because of the problem of antibiotic resistance, Europe now restricts livestock antibiotic usage to 4 antibiotics which are excluded from being used in treating human illnesses. The problems of antibiotic and hormone contamination of meat has led Europe to refuse importation of US meat.
Since 1995 the FDA has permitted the use of implanted hormones in cattle. These hormones include estradiol, progesterone, norgestomet, testosterone and the synthetic anabolic steroids, seranol and trenbolone. |

Pharmaceutical companies are now clearly responding to the problem of antibiotic resistance by developing new ones. Lastly, some pharmaceutical companies (for example, Pfizer and Bayer) have even started advertising campaigns about inappropriate antibiotic use (similar to beer companies that advertise "Know when to say when"). For example, a full-page advertisement in People magazine was titled: "How to Help Antibiotics Help You." Within this ad was the statement "Don't insist on a prescription for an antibiotic if you have a viral infection, such as a cold or flu. |

Moreover, unnecessary use of these drugs contributes to antibiotic resistance, a process in which bacteria become immune to the antibiotics needed to control them.
LI The best way to fight a cold is to not catch one in the first place. Siberian ginseng has been shown to reduce the incidence of infection by over 95 percent. Take 1 cup of the tea (in bags) three times a day for eight to ten weeks before the colds season starts. And andrographis, when used throughout the cold season, reduces the risk of catching cold by more than 50 percent. |

Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to antibiotic resistance, a potentially dangerous situation in which infection-causing bacteria become immune to the effects of certain antibiotics. Relaxation, enough sleep, water, staying warm and aspirin may be useful in treating cold symptoms.
Maintaining a strong immune system is important in avoiding colds. Stress and a poor diet can damage the immune system; and nutrients such as antioxidants, which enhance immunity, are important for the prevention of any infection. |

| Because of concerns about antibiotic resistance, several European countries banned the routine use of antibiotics in livestock feed in the 1970s. In the United States, in 1977, the FDA proposed halting the routine use of penicillin and tetracycline in animal feeds. The FDA commissioner at the time called the proposal "the first step toward FDA's ultimate goal of eliminating, to the extent possible, the non-therapeutic use in animals of any drugs needed to treat disease in man. |
| Here's why antibiotic resistance is a concern: Only a few effective antibiotics are available for treating some very serious infections. If you happen to get one of those infections, and it is caused by bacteria that are resistant to these antibiotics, the results could be fatal. That's the worst case. A more common scenario might go like this: You eat antibiotic-resistant, disease-causing bacteria in, say, undercooked hamburger, which makes you sick. You then go to the doctor to be treated with an antibiotic, but the antibiotic your doctor first prescribes might not work,

| We are no longer so optimistic. antibiotic resistance has been increasing at a rapid rate. Research now shows that 2-3% of all GC in Holland produces beta-lactamase, as do 30-40% of all strains in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.49 The 1985 United States STD treatment guidelines note that there is:50

Not only is it poisonous in itself, but studies have shown that mercury amalgam fillings in teeth may contribute to immune suppression and to the development of antibiotic resistance.
Other pollutants that affect the immune system include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — the kinds of petroleum byproducts that were produced in massive quantities by the burning of the oil fields in Kuwait and that can also be released by ordinary household chemicals. |

The FDA, the USDA, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention are cooperating in response to an American Society of Microbiology task force on antibiotic resistance, established in 1995. The program grew out of the concerns by the FDA and other scientific experts about how to bes;t maintain antibiotic effectiveness, ensure safety, and increase the availability of new products to veterinarians and the food industry.

Kombucha may contain antibiotic substances and, theoretically, could cause antibiotic resistance.
Those who use kombucha should be extremely careful in its preparation in order to avoid contamination with pathogenic bacteria and or fungi. The tea should not be prepared or stored in ceramic or lead containers, as lead can leach into the tea.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Those who drink more than 4 ounces daily of Kombucha tea frequently experience nausea, vomiting and headaches. There have been reports of allergic reactions, jaundice, and head and neck pain. |

| The growing problem of antibiotic resistance. The widespread use and abuse of antibiotics is becoming increasingly alarming for many reasons besides the epidemic of chronic candidiasis, including the development of "superbugs" that are resistant to currently available antibiotics. According to many experts, as well as the World Health Organization, we are coming dangerously close to arriving at a "post-antibiotic era" where many infectious diseases will once again become almost impossible to treat. |
| Current research shows that antibiotic resistance in bacteria is associated with the lipid content of the bacteria in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.27 The action of the alkylglycerol was to inhibit the synthesis of lipids in the microbial cell.

In the January/February issue of FDA Consumer the headline story, "Antibiotic Resistance Down On The Chicken Farm", details information about actions taken by the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) to address this problem. The CVM proposed that permission to sell Baytril (enrofloxin), a Bayer product, for use in chickens and turkeys be withdrawn. Enrofloxin is a quinilone antibiotic, which is a type of antibiotic widely used to treat human diseases. The poultry industry has been using the quinilone antibiotics to control the resistant mutant form of e.coli that can kill humans. |

| It has been well demonstrated that antibiotic resistance is much more common where antibiotics are used more often.6 This is particularly a problem in hospitals where infections caused by resistant strains of organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa often lead to fatal complications.
Since there is evidence that resistance to antibiotics is less of a problem when antibiotics are used sparingly, reduction in antibiotic prescriptions may be the only significant way to address the problem. |

No prescriptions are needed for an antibiotic that may produce side effects and cause antibiotic resistance to develop. My hope is that this information will cause many physicians, clinics, and hospitals to make HP available to patients.
This therapy has other important considerations. During influenza epidemics massive amounts of days are lost from work. HP will get patients well and back to work quickly saving many man-hours. Additionally, the influenza virus acts by stripping off the lining membranes from the bronchial tubes. |

It's important to note, however, that antibiotics have zero effect against viral infections and that every antibiotic treatment increases the risk of antibiotic resistance in the body, which can come into play when an antibiotic is needed to fight some much more serious illnesses. It's true, though, that a pocket of chronic bacterial infection can seed the lung and persist unrecognized, causing repeated chronic infections. I've had good success with antibiotic therapy in specialized cases, but this is not something to undertake lightly. |
